Black Messiah: The Return of Greatness

They say good things come to those who wait….well dammit we have been waiting for fourteen long years! So much has changed in the world over a period of fourteen years. However D’Angelo’s commitment to sharing substantive, soulful music with the world has remained constant. I think that I can speak for myself, and fans across the globe when I say that I am grateful for this project.

In a world where bubblegum, auto tuned, pop, cookie cutter foolishness reigns supreme, I am thankful for artists who remain true to their craft, and refuse to wh*re it out for a few coins!

Can we talk about this new album though??? I mean I can honestly say that my expectations were anything but high. Not because I lost faith in D’Angelo as an artist, but because I was blindsided by his latest release. I did not have enough time to get my anticipation in order. So, at 12:00AM on Monday, December 15, 2014 I hit download like the rest of the world, and purchased the album.

Let me say this.....D’Angelo’s latest release is a far cry from 2000’s ever so popular Voodoo. In fact it is a stark contrast. Black Messiah is extremely complicated, and simplistic all in one swoop. It is dark and it is light. It is love and it is hate. It is movement and it is stillness. All of this yin & yang is fueled by struggle, pain, spirituality, hurt, regret, joy, wins, losses, life, pain, and sorrow. All of these things compounded together equate to LOVE.

My take on soul is that it is the deepest and most intimate level of your spirit. This album quenches my thirst, and makes my soul smile. My heart is full, and my cup of humility runneth over! In case you care…I know you care….I am in the midst of a deep affair with the entire project. However the standout tracks of the moment include 1. Ain’t That Easy   5. Really Love   7. Till It’s Done (Tutu)   12. Another Life.

So, head on out and support D’Angelo and his highly anticipated, latest release. Oh, and raise a glass of something good for The Vanguard, because they literally rock!
