Matte About You: Liquid Lippies & All The Rave

It seems that everywhere you look and turn these days someone is ranting and raving about matte liquid lipsticks. If I must say so myself, the cosmetic market is beyond saturated with the product as of this date. I have always loved a good matte lipstick as it stays put, and does not budge throughout the day. However matte liquid lipsticks were a relatively new concept to me until a few months ago. So, what is a gal to do but try it out for herself?

My first round of matte liquid lipstick came from Colourpop, which is one of my favorite affordable, but quality cosmetic brands. Let me just say that for $6 you cannot go wrong, and the company did not disappoint. Honestly based on prior experience with Colourpop I would not have expected anything less than what I received. Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick is a staple, strike that, a necessity in the makeup arsenal of my girlfriend Aishah and I. We literally do not leave home without it, especially when heading out for a night on the town, or an all-day business meeting. A gal needs her lip to be just as snatched as the rest of her face throughout the day and night!

My second batch of matte liquid lipstick came from MAC, who was beyond late to the game as their product rolled out months after Coloupop and several other companies. Nonetheless I am very loyal to MAC as they have kept a gal’s face together on many of nights. Now you know good and well you were not going to be able to grab the MAC version of the product for $6, let us be real here people. MAC’s matte liquid lipsticks retail for $20 each. Yes, that is steep, very steep as a regular old tube of MAC lipstick retails for $16. I reserve these babies for uber exclusive nights out on the town.

My overall impression is that I really love both the Colourop and MAC matte liquid lipsticks. The Colourpop products dry down to a matte finish much faster than the MAC version, and MAC’s version is a bit on the sheer side. Nonetheless with fool proof application, they both stay in place for hours, and hours, and cocktail after cocktail. Now that is my kind of lip!

For every gal I hear rave about matte liquid lipstick, there is another in the wings griping about her experience. I always have the same response…..”girl you are not applying your lip correctly.” #periodtothepointblank So, in the effort of being a good friend to all of my readers, let me share my bulletproof matte lipstick application method, which works for regular matte lipstick, and liquid lipstick:

1.     Exfoliate-Scrub your lips with sugar scrub to remove any dead or excess skin.

2.     Hydrate-Moisturize your lips with a nourishing lip balm or moisturizer. Be sure to blot any excess product from your lips, as you are going for a matte  look. It also does not hurt to drinks tons of water day in and day out to ensure those lips are nice and juicy!

3.     Prep-Line the perimeter of your lips with a lip pencil that is relatively close to the shade of your matte liquid lipstick. I always go the extra step and fill my entire lips with the lip pencil as well, this ups the ante on the staying power, but is certainly not necessary. What can I say…I can be extra at times!

4.     Apply-You can use a lip brush or the applicator on your tube of matte liquid lipstick, this is totally personal preference. If you are a beginner, I would say go for an actual lip brush, but if you are an OG to this makeup thing like myself, go for the applicator. Regardless of your choice, be sure to employ your steady hand to ensure a sharp, precise, and snatched application. If you go a little overboard and get extra product outside of your lip, no worries…simply take a flat concealer brush, dip it in a bit of flesh tone concealer, and clean up your perimeter.

That is it ladies, there is nothing to it but to do it! Whether you are going the splurge or steal route for your products, make sure you go the slay route for your application. If you know like I know, after a few hours of wear you need to find a Ladies Room, and a damp napkin to carefully wipe off your lips, and reapply the lipstick. Trust me when I tell you that if you avoid this step, your lips will start to crack and flake, and you will have little pieces of lipstick colored skin all over your teeth. #thatainthot #itsactuallydisgusting #thankmelater
