In The Nude: It’s All in The Undertones

Regardless of whether you turn left or right, there is a nude lip just about every where. I am a firm believer that women can wear any lip color that they want. It is all a matter of selecting the most complimentary color for your skin tone, and application. I know, I know, I know you do not believe me. In all of my years as a professional makeup artist I was never surprised when a woman would tell me she did not believe she could wear a certain color. I found solace in her surprise when she saw her face, and the color she said she could never wear.

I am totally here for all things nude when it comes to a good lip. If executed properly, it can be just as bold and powerful as a red or brown lip. What I am not here for is chalky, orange, and opaque lips on brown girls. I cannot and will not applaud this sheer foolishness. Ladies….know your skin undertones just like you know your shoe size.

Brown women often have warm undertones, which means you have to warm up your nude lip. The easiest way to do this is by prepping your pout with a warm plum or brown lip liner. Trust me you will not look ridiculous, just stay with me. Follow suit with your warm undertones and find a rich, deep nude that will compliment your skin tone, and your selfies!

Here is my go-to routing for a fab nude lip. Line the perimeter of your lips, and lightly fill the actual lips. One the lips are lined and lightly filled, proceed with applying your nude lipstick. Bring the lip together by applying a light, sheer gloss. Rub those lips together and voila.  Yaaaaaasss push through nude lip!

So, the next time you are headed out for a night on the town with a fierce, yet subtle smokey eye, opt for a nude lip over a red. You will instantly notice how powerful the lip is when paired against the contrasting smokey eye. Get into it ladies, and let me know how it works out for you.
